Cooking Up the Quest

My most memorable meals have been eaten in the wild: a bowl of Hungarian goulash after a long day of canoeing, a picnic of pita, hummus, sausage and cucumber on a bedrock by the river, a perfect steak frites at the cottage. It’s a known fact that food always tastes better in the great outdoors. And because I love to cook I had to find a way to incorporate cooking in my Quest. After considering various options, I’ve decided to critique various camping cookbooks. Amazon lists over 1,000 “camping cookbooks” and my local library has 33 which I can take out on loan. I’m all set, at least for a couple of years!

My plan is to pick a cookbook, try out a few recipes and then review the cookbook on my blog. I’m currently trying out recipes from Camp Cooking, the Black Feather Guide: Eating Well in the Wild.

I was looking forward to digging into this book because Black Feather is a well-known adventure wilderness company. I’ve already pegged them as potential outfitters for my trip to Nahanni National Park.

There are several recipes I want to try out: cinnamon buns, curry cheddar spread, peanut butter fudge, granola bars and Fred’s Sprite cake (a cake made with sprite – that should be interesting). I think I'll start with the Sprite cake!
