To RV or not to RV?

As soon as I was committed to my Quest, Michel and I started discussing the logistics of visiting the parks. Since travelling to certain parks will be very costly, I will, where possible, drive to the parks. Out of the 47 parks, 14 are within a 20-hour drive from Ottawa and another 13 are within a 40-hour drive. That’s a lot of time spent in the car and since I’m not a fan of road trips, I’ve been thinking about how to improve the experience.

My first idea was to repair and renovate my parents’ old motorhome which has been parked at our cottage for the last two years. I thought it was the perfect solution: I would save money and travel in style. I pictured us hitting the road in a spiffy, newly renovated RV. Estimates of how much it would cost to make my parents’ old RV road worthy put an end to this dream.

My second idea was to rent an RV. I searched numerous websites and quickly concluded that renting an RV isn’t as economical as I thought. I also have to admit that the idea of spending all day and all night cooped up in a small vehicle with Michel was a bit scary. We love each other but we also love our space! It might work but I’d rather first try out RV living on a week-end jaunt than a two-week trip.

So Michel and I arrived at the perfect solution. We’ll replace his truck with a commercial van that we can customize to our liking. If you’re not sure what I mean have a look at the pictures in https://40hoursoffreedom.com/. I’m very excited at the prospect of creating our own little home on wheels that will be both economical and cool. And if we are in need of private space, we can always stay one night in a hotel (or maybe I’ll stay in the hotel and Michel can stay in the van!) We’ve already started planning our van: this week’s discussion is whether we need a shower in the van. I think yes, Michel is not convinced. More on our van in future blogs!
